Senior Ryan Sanborn has been named as one of 20 football players across San Diego County to be voted on to see who will be the 6th finalist eligible to win the KUSI Silver Pigskin Award.
Given out since 1999, The KUSI Silver Pigskin has become the equivalent of the Heisman Trophy for San Diego Prep Football, annually awarded to the most outstanding football player in the county. 5 Finalists are selected by the PPR Staff, with the 6th finalist being voted upon by the fans. The leading vote getter among the 20 players named last week will join the first 5 selections on stage and remain eligible to earn the most prestigious individual award given in San Diego High School Football.
Ryan has capped off his spectacular career with his best season. As a quarterback, he has thrown for 1,548 yards on 64% completions, throwing 22 touchdowns to just 4 interceptions. His QB rating of 128.7 is the 3rd best in all of San Diego County. He was selected last week as the Pacific League Offensive Player of the Year. On defense, Ryan has made 62 tackles from his strong safety position, along with a sack and two interceptions.
Ryan plays both sides of the ball while still being able to kick and punt at an All-American level. Ryan averages over 66 yards per kickoff. Of his 62 kickoffs this season, 57 of them have gone for touchbacks. He is also averaging over 40 yards per punt, with over 50% of his punts pinning opponents inside their 20 yard line. Ryan has been selected as a US Army All-American for his work as a specialist, and will be kicking and punting next year at Stanford University.
