The Lancer football team defeated the Southwest High School Raiders by a final score of 41-15 on Friday night to advance to the CIF Division 5 Semifinals. It was the program's first playoff win since 2014, and the first home playoff win since 2012.
The Lancers got off to another quick start, forcing the Raiders to punt on their opening possession, and then scored on a 63 yard touchdown strike from Ryan Sanborn to Jonathan Gordon. It was the first of 3 times that Sanborn and Gordon would connect for touchdowns, with all 3 coming from beyond 60 yards. In all, Sanborn finished the night 5-9 passing for 210 yards and 3 touchdowns. Gordon caught those 3 touchdown passes for a combined 199 receiving yards. Sam Camposeco and Trevor Brokowski helped balance out the Lancer offense. Camposeco rushed 13 times for 115 yards and 2 touchdowns. Brokowski added 5 carries for 77 yards, including a season long 54 yard burst that set up the Lancers 2nd touchdown.
Gordon and Sanborn have shared a special connection all season, and each was able to break a school record on Friday. Sanborn now holds the mark for most touchdown passes in a season with 25. 13 of those have been to Gordon, which is also a single-season record.
The win advances the Lancers to the semi-finals, where they will take on 2nd seeded Tri-City Christian. Earlier this season, the Eagles handed the Lancers their only loss of the season, winning 27-12. The game is on Friday, November 16th at Tri-City Christian, with kickoff scheduled for 7pm.
